Scientific analysis to inform policymaking

Weathering Risk unites state-of-the-art climate security impact data and expert conflict analysis to bridge the gaps in our understanding of climate change impacts on peace and security. It provides analysis, capacity support tools, dialogues and trainings to promote peace and resilience in a changing climate.

Our forward-looking analysis uses spatially disaggregated climate impact data, scenarios, combines qualitative and quantitative research and identifies entry points to facilitate policies and interventions that are informed by climate-security risks. 

Projects have spanned the African continent, the Pacific, Yemen, Jordan and Iraq and continue to expand to new geographies and regions.

Climate-informed peacebuilding
The Weathering Risk Peace Pillar

The Peace Pillar translates Weathering Risk's climate-security analysis into peacebuilding action where it is needed most.

Five peacebuilding projects are being piloted, two by the Berghof Foundation – in Iraq and Somalia –two by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Nigeria and the Bay of Bengal and one in Yemen by the European Institute of Peace. 

Each project is implemented in partnership with local partners, with the Weathering Risk Peace Pillar providing technical advice, tools and capacity support on the integration of climate risk information. We conduct trainings with the different project teams, offer bespoke guidance to evaluate impact of these pilots on both peace and climate resilience. adelphi coordinates the evaluation and knowledge management across the programme to ensure cross-learning across pilot projects and that the lessons can be amplified to inform programming globally.

    Operationalising the Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace Declaration

    Climate finance for fragile and conflict-affected contexts continues to fall short. Although extreme weather events affect three times as many people in fragile and conflict-affected states annually compared to other countries, they receive up to 80 times less climate finance. This practical note provides guidance for actors to deliver peace-positive climate action and climate-informed peacebuilding in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.

Research & analysis

Innovative climate data and state-of-the-art quantitative methods identify the current and future impacts of climate change. This is combined with on-the-ground qualitative research at different scales and from diverse geographies to build up a comprehensive analysis of compound climate and security risks. Access the methodology paper here.

Capacity support tools

Our climate-security risk analysis is used to produce politically and programmatically relevant information and tools that support decision making. Through serious games, detailed forecasting and a replicable assessment methodology, we identify the right questions to ask and how to make use of the available information.

Dialogues & training

We initiate timely, politically pertinent discussions that convene, connect, and bolster the growing community of practice on climate security. Using our analysis to inform the discourse, we support the translation of dialogue to action by developing tailored trainings that support policymakers and implementing partners in integrating climate security risk analysis into strategic and operational processes.
